The Intensive Care Units within the Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust are split over two sites. Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury has a 12 bed ITU and High Wycombe hospital hosts a smaller unit with 6-8 beds. Across the two units there are over 870 admission a year, predominately medical emergencies and approximately 25% elective admissions.

There are 14 consultants with a variety of speciality interests, including simulation teaching, ECHO and ultrasound, end of life care and medical education. Stoke Mandeville Hosptial has a regional burns unit and spinal rehabilitation centre allowing for some experience in these fields.

The units are currently recruiting to several clinical trials. There is the opportunity to become involved in teaching, progress ultrasound skills (FICE) and attend governance and M&M meetings.

For an idea of daily activities on the unit please review our FICM unit brief here.
